I am one of the artists who were trained in drawing in Paris (there is no classical drawing school strictly speaking in Switzerland), drawing after the antique, first, drawing after nature, then. And this stage, a necessary part of learning, helped to build a common foundation.

When I studied in Les Beaux-Arts in Paris after my preparatory class, the science of drawing was indeed considered as an indispensable step in the elaboration of the creative idea, as shown by the pedagogy put in place by my preparatory class and in the academies and schools of fine arts, up to Rome and Florence, still today: the documentary study was a prerequisite of the disciplines taught,Study of flower, bird, fish, streets … we learned the proportions, the perspective, the rendering of volumes and shadows, the three orders … We studied the ancient examples without denying the lesson of nature! “Drawing is learning to see.” Novalis “looked at the world with the careful curiosity of an unoccupied angel.”

However, the “real” drawing can not be taught! My two professors at Koronin defined it very well !!! What can be taught are the conditions of drawing, that is to say, the education of the eye face to the nature and to the drawing itself (need to learn what cannot be learned) …

The extreme complexity of the drawing is due to the multiplicity of its forms, as to its role, singular expression of a project, “probity” of the work to come. This extreme complexity is found at all levels of drawing practice, shooting of an episode in the sky or purely mental, sight or imagination … G. Lanvin – Indeed, drawing is not the domain of theory, but that of practice. We spoke in its time, and I was interested, by the teaching of a Lecoq de Boisbaudran. He was the master at the Petite Ecole in the rue de l’école de Medecine (Paris), Ancestor of the Ecole des Arts Décoratifs, of a Rodin, among others. He was going from the part to the whole, on the “pattern” then from memory, sometimes very quickly and sometimes in a detailed way, according to model, motionless or moving, according to plasters, in the street … what I do today with Isabelle and Philippe.
